It was the day after Christmas when all was quiet, no one stirred, just me sitting unable to sleep with a belly full of food pondering the technology world.
Good start eh? But it was back then where I found myself a little cashed-up from pressies and the question “what to spend the money on?”.
So the thought came to purchase the Apple Tablet PC when it’s released.
Last Thursday morning early Oz time we knew it was to be the iPad, not quite 10″ screen, 1/2″ thin (love that expression when it’s meant to be tiny) and an Apple Chipset that’s fast. Even then there wasn’t the compulsion to get one. Oh yeh I want one but how desperately. Certainly not as desperate as I wanted an iPhone or my first MacBook but there is still the hunger there.
So we move to 2 weeks after the event and listening to those in the know (and those who think they know) and I have to say that there is a lot in there for someone in the line of work I am in, that of the web & audio. Its obvious that to take a tole such as the iPad to a client & play sound or demo the website is rather flash & extravagant, but what an impression. Add to that the on the roll for blogging, and the uses are in the plus already.
On the negative side there is another mobile internet access cost. WiFi looks good for those areas that have it! but Maccas, Mooloolaba & that’s about it, nothing also that’s nead cheap enough to call economical. For my workplace, they think anything other that PC, altered by them, for their network is the only way they’ll allow you on their network. iPad is a Mac, just need through access to the internet via their firewall, is all that’s asked for, but that’s another argument on another day.
I hope that the SIM for the iPad, along with access time will have the ability to be pre-paid. Too long the mobile service providers have had the upper hand on Australians who want to be up with technology. Thing is, as the rest get sucked in to that tech, the prices stay the say up, as they rub their collective hands together is the profits go through the roof.
As a foot note, out friends in the USA, iPhone users should be rejoicing, as they can now get away from AT&T, get the Google phone, from any provider that services them best and then have the iPad, doing all but be a phone, also on a data network that suits them the best…Win Win
As for me, I will be on the path for the 16gig, with cellular access if I can get past the lack of multi-tasking.
April can’t get here soon enough
